Sembcorp’s Alinta deal lifts earnings outlook but pushes up carbon intensity

Singapore’s state investment fund–backed conglomerate Sembcorp Industries announced on Dec. 11 that it will acquire Alinta Energy, an Australian power producer owned by Hong Kong’s Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, for AUD 5.6 billion (roughly USD 3.7 billion). Analysts say the deal presents both opportunities and challenges for Sembcorp.

Sembcorp’s push into Australia raises portfolio emissions

Sembcorp and Alinta Energy said in statements that the acquisition marks a strategic entry into the Australian energy market and will help expand Sembcorp’s footprint in developed economies. The deal is expected to boost the company’s renewables portfolio and earnings, supporting its goal of reaching 25 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2028.
