Japan has started commercial operations at its first floating offshore wind farm, construction firm Toda Corporation said on Monday. The 16.8-megawatt (MW) project, located off Nagasaki in southern Japan, is the first offshore wind facility to be certified under a new legal framework jointly overseen by the country’s industry and land ministries.

The floating design is suited to Japan’s deep waters and exposure to natural disasters. “Floating structures are relatively stable even in the case of earthquakes or typhoons,” Kei Ushigami, head of marine renewable energy at Toda, told AFP.
