SBTi releases new net-zero standard draft: What companies should know

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has released a new draft of its Corporate Net-Zero Standard on Nov. 6, introducing for the first time the concept of Ongoing Emissions Responsibility (OER), along with more precise definitions for Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions. If adopted, the updated standard is expected to be fully implemented by 2028.

Revised standard to become mandatory by 2028

The proposed revision has entered its second round of public consultation, which runs until Dec. 8. SBTi plans to publish Version 2 of the Corporate Net-Zero Standard in 2026, and companies that have already set net-zero roadmaps under the current standard will be required to transition to the new version no later than 2028.
