Indonesia’s Sumatra island has been struck by its worst disaster in over 20 years. A series of tropical cyclones triggered landslides and floods, killing at least 700 people.

Local authorities and environmental groups cite uncontrolled deforestation and poor natural resource management as key factors exacerbating the crisis. During a disaster site visit, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto plans to include environmental protection and forest conservation in school curricula.
