Intermittency, security of supply, and affordability have emerged as the core energy trilemma as renewable shares continue to rise. Denmark’s national transmission system operator Energinet outlined its strategy for maintaining grid stability through market-based mechanisms, sector integration, and digitalization, as the country moves toward its goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2030.

At a media gathering on Dec. 2, Energinet, the Trade Council of Denmark, Taipower, and members of the Danish Decarbonization Alliance exchanged insights on strengthening Taiwan’s energy resilience. Denmark has contributed to over 50% of Taiwan’s installed offshore wind capacity and is expected to be Taiwan’s largest source of foreign direct investment this year, according to Peter Sand, Director of the Trade Council of Denmark in Taipei.

Open market boosts flexibility and balances a high-renewable grid

As Denmark moves toward nearly 90% renewable generation, the open market mechanism has become essential to maintaining grid stability. Danish and EU regulations require balancing resources and system services to be procured through market-based processes, embedding flexibility directly into operations. Under Denmark’s decentralized dispatch model, generators and consumers shoulder much of the balancing themselves, reducing reliance on central intervention.
