The Philippine government is stepping up efforts to diversify its energy mix, with recent progress in both waste-to-energy and geothermal development.

It has named 11 companies eligible to bid for waste-to-energy projects, including major conglomerates, infrastructure groups and energy companies. The government also plans to allocate PHP 10.07 billion (about USD 160.6 million) to reduce risks during the early exploration and development stages of geothermal projects, with the aim of accelerating investment.

11 companies qualify to bid — which three stand out?

The Philippine Department of Energy said on Sept. 7 that 11 companies had qualified for the Special Green Energy Auction for Waste-to-Energy (GEA-WTE). Together, they have proposed 14 projects that would convert solid waste into electricity, helping the country expand its low-carbon power supply while addressing its waste management challenges.

Unlock the full article to explore three key takeaways:

  1. 11 companies qualified for waste-to-energy bidding, proposing 14 projects targeting 400 MW.

  2. Geothermal exploration is the riskiest, most capital-intensive stage — the government plans PHP 10.07B in de-risking funds.

  3. The Philippines is the world's 3rd-largest geothermal producer, supplying 6.4% of 2025 generation.
