U.S.-Japan $73 billion energy pact faces viability questions over SMR, gas projects

The United States and Japan on March 19 announced expanded energy cooperation, with Japanese investment of up to USD 73 billion into U.S. energy projects spanning small modular reactors (SMRs) and natural gas generation.

The move comes as both governments look to strengthen energy security and scale firm power supply to support industrial demand and data center growth. However, analysts in Japan have cautioned that the structure of the deals could leave Japanese companies exposed to unfavorable contract terms.
