Rising international fuel prices and supportive government policies have fueled growing interest in rooftop solar across Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Singapore. However, industry sources noted that Vietnam’s planned adjustments to time-based electricity pricing, together with uncertainty surrounding its two-component tariff structure, have dampened market sentiment. By contrast, Thailand is viewed as having stronger potential for actual project deployment.

Why rooftop solar is regaining attention in Southeast Asia amid Middle East conflict

Thailand’s consumer price index (CPI) rose 2.89% year-on-year in April, marking the country’s largest increase in more than three years. In Vietnam, inflation climbed even faster, with April CPI rising 5.46% from the preceding year. In some countries and regions, fuel shortages have even led to long lines at gas stations.

Unlock the full article to explore three key takeaways:

  1. Thailand’s rooftop solar can cut household electricity bills by about 77%, while the quota for selling excess power back to the grid may expand from 90 MW to 500 MW.
  2. Vietnam’s rooftop solar market grew rapidly in 2025, but revised time-based electricity pricing could reduce savings by 15% to 20%.
  3. Industry players expect commercial rooftop solar projects to outpace residential installations as companies respond to RE100 and ESG demands.
