Thailand is positioning the 2025 Southeast Asian Games as the region’s first low-carbon, sustainability-focused sporting event, integrating renewable energy, circularity initiatives, and low-emissions mobility across venue operations and logistics.
The opening show on Dec. 9 replaced fuel-intensive fireworks with a water-based performance featuring underwater ballet by former national athletes in a reclaimed-water pool. The traditional fuel-burning cauldron was also replaced with a digital “Green Flame,” a symbolic shift intended to reduce emissions while preserving the event’s ceremonial legacy.
“This green hosting can become a benchmark for future sports or tourism events in the country,” said Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports.
