Vietnam Electricity (EVN) subsidiary EVNGENCO1 is planning to invest VND 4.4 trillion (USD 167 million) into three floating solar projects, expanding the use of hydropower reservoirs for renewable energy generation.

The projects would add nearly 270 MW of floating solar capacity across reservoirs already operated by the state-owned utility group, allowing new renewable generation to be developed without requiring large additional land areas.

Unlock the full article to explore three key takeaways:

  1. The proposed developments include a 96 MW floating solar plant on the Dai Ninh reservoir, a 100 MW first-phase project on the Ham Thuan reservoi, and a 70 MW second-phase expansion on the Da Mi reservoir.
  2. The expansion builds on the 47.5 MWp Da Mi floating solar plant, which entered operation in 2019 as Vietnam’s first utility-scale floating solar project.
  3. Reservoir-based floating solar is now gaining traction across Southeast Asia. Among the largest planned developments is Masdar’s more than 300 MWp floating solar project at Malaysia’s Chereh Dam, signaling that the model is moving beyond pilot scale.
