Japan pilots offshore floating AI data center powered by wind, cooled by seawater

Investment demand for data centers in Yokohama is set to surge, including plans for a large-scale floating data center spearheaded by Japanese shipping heavyweight NYK Line in a cross-sector move.

The offshore facility is designed to draw power from nearby offshore wind farms, easing pressure on the regional grid. The project has already secured backing from Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), with developers targeting commercial operations by 2030.
